Is this a GOOD News or BAD News Post?

WELL IT’S A GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS SCENARIO.

So the bad news first – we didn’t get our grant to finance a class set of iTouch iPod devices. So much for all the research on educational uses and storage ideas!

happyunhappy

However the Bowra Bunch will not be daunted! So the good news is we have ONE iTouch device and we are going to use it to the best educational advantage that we can manage.

My last resort was to email a request to our school principal for more money to buy an inexpensive set of headphones mic lead and an Apple USB Power Adapter so we can store the iTouch in the Netbook storage trolley and know that each morning the netbooks and the iTouch are charged up ready for the day’s lessons. The result was a reply email that simply stated ‘Go for it Chookie’. So I did:) And here is how we will attempt to utilise our iTouch amongst our 45 students at Mary’s Bowraville!

So with the USB adapter we can add our one iTouch to the Netbook Trolley along with our 15 netbooks for storage and charging.

Bowra ways with iTouch

iTune APPS

These are applications for simple games and puzzles that give students problem solving activities in a school  environment where we encourage software resilience, persistence and completion of a task. Most of the instructions were available on the Apps site from iTunes and therefore students are challenged to turn, shake or perform a variety of screen taps to successfully engage in their chosen activity. Other KLA apps give students interesting ways to reference or skill drill. Remember that Apps are not the whole teaching tool for education. We have found that our students are keen to work their way through an activity as a reward or special opportunity to engage in a reference activity by connecting to the Internet with our school iTouch.

  • Fun apps – such as ‘iSwap faces, paper toss, Skate Grind, tubes maze and conventional games like chess, connect four, draughts, tic tac toe
  • Music apps – piano keyboards and drum kits and guitar chords and xylophone and songs and metronome, beatbox
  • Literacy Apps –dictionary, word searches, spelling, phonics, letter scramble, stories, thesaurus, letter tracing, flash card maker, grammar
  • Numeracy Apps – times tables, shapes, conversion charts, maths problem solving
  • Science Apps – astrology, science glossary, planets,
  • HSIE apps – Australian constitution, countries, cities, Google earth,
  • Health – iBrush teeth, nutrition tips, heartbeats, drivers ed, bones, BMI, recipes, first aid
  • RE – Noah’s ark story, bible, prayers,
  • Art – whiteboard, doodle, photo sketch, art history, colouring
  • Languages – when we studied Japan this year, we used the Japan ‘lite’ apps to practice simple greetings in Japanese

MOVIES – Downloading free Movies in mpeg4 format from VideoJug gave us an assortment of videos to watch. This is a free account but you can only download several movies each day. By saving them on the desktop they can easily be dragged into the ‘Movies’ section on the iTune’s Device list when sync our St Mary’s iTouch. Initially I downloaded a variety of “How to” movies that included magic coin tricks, juggling, soccer skills, moon walking, using capital letters, and commas. We had created a movie to inspire the Olympians last year and ours WON. So of course it is included in our movie list too

AUDIO Books- The latest  or most popular audio books for children can be downloaded from iTunes Store but as we are on a budget, I discovered free audio stories in MP3 format such as Story Nory and PBS Kids. Our first list included: crafts, sign language, “The Brave Little Tailor”, “The Wizard who stole Katie’s spells” and “The Raven”

DOCUMENT STORAGE and RETRIEVAL Using iPhone Explore software (discovered on Google) on our PC laptop I could utilize the GoodReader Apps from iTunes ($1.99) in order to store, open and enlarge text from word documents, PDFs and spreadsheets that teachers can prepare for their students

QUIZZES – A great discovery was the iQuiz program that enables you to fill in quiz templates with questions and answers however it is only available for Mac users. The PC friendly program is being developed. So I got to thinking how we could create appropriate quizzes with the tools that we already have. Presentations can easily be created for our Personal Response devices for children to use the clickers to vote their personal answers to the class question on the slide. I created a clone slide for each question slide but indicated the correct answer on the second clone slide by using the Autoshape tools available in word documents.

By converting these presentations into JPEG formats they can be saved into an appropriately named folder and stored in the Pictures folder in our iTunes. These could have converted the presentation into a PDF but it is a bit more exciting to tap the screen and the correct answer ‘appears’ because you have actually advanced to the next picture image.

iTunes Uis part of the iTunes store and contains thousands of media files from K-12 resources and university lectures shared in one convenient place. Students can gain access by using their iPhone or iPod touch using your Apple ID account. Futhermore your educational team can create manage their own learning environment by uploading media files to iTunes U.  So it makes sense to tap into this learning in hand environment that is so familiar to our students today. Here are a few that were downloaded to trial during Term 4 (Clouds K-2, Claymation K-3, Fractions and Decimals 3-5, For the Love of Teaching – staff)

PODCASTS-downloaded from the iTunes store for staff development and student’s stories. And of course we can make our own with Audacity as we have done so in the past. I added our few podcasts from our previous experiments.

VOICE MEMO and RECORDING.We needed a recording device and I found a simple and inexpensive device from iTunes Store to turn our iTouch iPod into a recording device. This is where the earphone/mic set will come in handy. voicememoSeveral Apps have been downloaded from the Store but I found this one to be the most effective as it captured, stored and labeled the memo easily. Now we just need to practice recording our reflective memos!

Here is a great U-Tube video to help us make good use of this recording APPs. I hope you find it useful too.

Well this is our Plan B for using our iTouch device in an educational setting at St Mary’s Bowraville. Having only one device will be a challenge but that is the stuff we are made of at St Mary’s!  The Chookie has landed and the Bowra Mob will start experimenting over the next few terms. This is just a reflection of our journey and as far as the analogy goes – we are still looking at the road map! Although we are a very small school with a very small budget, we focus on ways to provide our students with some resources coupled with a lot of creativity to stand amongst the giants of the diocese.

Wish us luck!

New to Netbooks

Using our Netbooks at St Mary’s

Here we are trying out the new ASUS netbooks in class. Stage 3 and 4 worked with Miss Landers in their literacy group this week.IMG_1026

I managed to change the BIOS boot up and build an image (well – I was satisfied with the 5th build) to include all the licenced and free software that we could load on our little netbooks. Sadly the wireless won’t support Internet connections until we move into our new school. These devices must work offline in class for a few months.

IMG_0054[1]

BTW – here we are welcoming in the Spring Equinox dust storm in September, dusty playground  and the new building under construction.IMG_0049

Our netbooks are stored in our netbook trolley and are charged up each night in a central demountable classroom ready for each day. The students transport three or four netbooks to their class for their publishing time for this month. Unfortunately, because of my limited hours to invest in reimaging and the four black outs we had today, I could only reimage 7 of the 15 netbooks ready for offline use in class. So everyone is trying to ‘play nice’ to share.

IMG_1028

However, being the resilient school that we are, teachers have started to use this new technology as part of their literacy groups. Here are a few photos of students utilising them to type in their literacy efforts into the Open Office software.

Transferring their skills from Microsoft to Open Office has evolved successfully. Its called ‘Software Resilience’. Well done teachers! Congrats to the students too!

As you can see – Martikka is far too busy in Miss Claire’s NALP class to be interviewed right now!pics 009

Talk about courageous!

These guys are sharing ideas and notes to add to ‘the story’ in Miss Lander’s class. New devices, new strategies, new software and new classroom organisation.

Hope you enjoy our first efforts in Pic format!

Experimenting with APPS for our iTouch

What APPS to Download for our school community???

iTouch

This will be our first venture into using our school iTouch. Researching available iPod models and appropriate APPS (or APPlicationS) can be a real challenge and there are many informative blogs and wikis out there to Google. Here is a link that I found most useful as it displayed the options for each iPods in a simple comparison chart.

Have a look at this link if you are still undecided which iPod model is best for you – http://ipod.about.com/od/ipodcomparisonchart/a/ipod_comparison.htm

Also this is an interesting link : 100 Ways to Use Your iPod to Learn.

Our first step into iTouch use was to download appropriate APPS for our students. A very basic level to use these devices, I know but we feel that it is a very good start. This link helped us create an ‘account’ with iTunes without using our Principal’s credit card! How to Create an iTunes account without a credit card

We recently acquired 15 ASUS eeePCs with 1GB of memory, 150GB hard drives and a 5 hour battery life and are thrilled with the prospect of working with these new tools. However, we don’t want our school environment to be exclusive to a singular device. Our desktops and netbooks will give students an opportunity to compose and produce work, access the Internet and engage in our licenced and free software in their classrooms. However, we believe that the iTouch can offer that ‘in your pocket’ mobility that can also offer easy access to the Internet and to a wide range of APPS that can be just as easily used in class room, on the sport / PE field and on excursions. Once the device is synced correctly,  the Apps work offline and this is of immense interest for us at St Mary’s.

We have had our iTouch for about 4 weeks now and can see how the students pick up the device and use the touch screen with ease. For students who need reward, self confidence and self esteem, this device has already proved to be an invaluable tool. We only have one to share between our 3 classes as a trial!

There are so many tools out there for the iPod Touch. But I do believe that there are a unique combination of factors contributing to the right iPod choice for us. We had to factor in the the size of the unit; what kind of APPS that teachers could choose from; the student input into choosing APPs;  the touch screen with the resizing ability; the access on and off Internet for information. So the iTouch won in favour of the amazing functionality as a learning device.  Exploring the APPS available on iTunes will give us a wide variety of applications for our students who, for the most part, are in need of motivation for engagement. I have downloaded many of these APPS but next week will add to our repertoire on our one-and-only iTouch device.

There are an abundant number of Apps available and with them comes the warning that not all Apps are great educational tools. Some are just snazzy new ways to do more ‘wroksheets’. There are a few sites that I managed to find to help a decerning novice like me! These two sites were very helpful: Apps for K-12 and iPhone and Kids. There are so many Apps coming out each month and so I put   AppMiner on my RSS account to keep updating me with new ones.

Here is our first To-Do-List- to download APPS for our K- 8 students:

  • Clock, Calendar, Notes, Calculator, Compass: all are basic yet essential tools
  • Yellow Pages and Australian Postcode book:both are a must for an Aussie iTouch
  • Safari, many bookmarks made from Internet spots
  • Blanks, words are not easy at this level but popular for use and competition
  • Procrastinate, organizational tool a favourite for staff in some schools.
  • Pocket Phonics, Match, Trace it, Wordsearches – many apps for student’s skill development
  • TicTacToe,Draughts, Chess, Code Cracker, Join the Dots, Connect Four: give strategy stimulation for one or more players
  • FlipBook Lite, language arts teachers are using to construct interactive small projects
  • GoogleEarth, virtual field trips, collaborative groups, across content areas
  • Capitals & Countries- both these apps lists capital cities around the world and countries with their basic stats
  • Braintuner, skills at low level, speed and competition good aspect of appPI83, very similar to to TI83 being used in classrooms
  • WordWarp, favorite word game
  • Dice, math tool for statistics and probability
  • Lose it!and Pedometer: reference for Health/PE
  • NikeTraining, Health/PE, videos used to show proper technique, to recommend routines for students away from school building
  • Dice3D, math tool for statistics and probability
  • CoinToss, math tool for statistics and probability
  • Coin Toss World Edition, math tool for statistics and probability also compares the coins from different countries displaying culture and history to integrate math and social studies content
  • WordBook dictionary, Thesaurus tools – a number are available for across content tool
  • Mini Pianos, Drum Kits and Guitar chord tutors - several apps to give creative students an opportunity to learn more and accompany music
  • Whiteboard, student collaboration tool across content areas
  • Flashgram, used for parts of speech although the presentation is for younger students
  • ChemTouch & Formulas – both offer handy formulas, Periodic Table and Amino Acid reference chart for Science for our Stage 4 students
  • Spell It, Spell Check, Spell Bee- 3 app games in two levels for differentiated abilities
  • Enigmo – a fluid dynamics based game. Good for puzzles and strategy.
  • Spore – there is a free version that gives you one or two levels to play and is a good starter activity for a jump into evolution.
  • Hanoi – simple Hanoi disc game where you have to figure out how to move the stack of discs from one side of the table to the other.
Tanzen – yet another puzzle, spatial awareness game
  • Quick Graph- dynamic graph and plotter – supports functions and easy to use calculator. Not as good as premium versions of graphs, but suffices for most class use.
  • iThought & Blue Sky- both are excellent concept mapping tools
  • TED- collection of videos from the TED conferences. Great for short clips, how assignments, or inspiration.
  • Kindle for iPhone if you have access to kindle or purchasing through Amazon, this can be a great way to read parts of novels. Just released but look for more future support of magazines, newspapers etc. where I think any class can get the students engaged through the written word.
  • InquisitorA good alternative for fast searching on the Internet. Gives more helpful descriptions of each link as opposed to the generic Google info.
  • The Game of Life, Cellular Automation
  • Basic Math, add, subtract, multiply, divide quiz
  • IQuotation, quotation database by category, author and favorite
  • Idioms, everyday idiom database
  • StoryLite, personalized adventure stories
  • Genius, typing program

What are you using in the way of APPS for your iPod device?? Can you shed some light on some more useful APPS before we move on to adding Microsoft docs and Podcasts to our storage??

Next week I will look into the podcasts that are available on iTunes for students. WETA Learning Media is also available on iTunes and use story to bring topics to life in HSIE, Science and Health.Three in particular have caught my attention:

Hooked on Phonics: uses images and songs to teach rhymes, phonics, letters and reading for early readers.

Global Wonders: a video podcast introducing students to the cultures of the world with entertaining cartoon characters, actual video and images from other countries.

CNN News: This is a 10 minute, commercial free, news platform for students in Stage 2. Interesting to see wht kind of news it will bring into our classrooms for current event discussions.

Looks like I will be happily busy at Bowra over the next few weeks!

Storing and Managing iTouch devices

So how can we do it at St Mary’s?

Our school is a very small primary school on the Mid North coast of NSW in Australia. Our student population is around 40-48 students each year. Most of these students are from the Indigenous community from the Bowraville district. Now we have vision and ingenuity born from necessity for our student community. The problem is that we do not have an unlimited budget for our school community to engage in the latest ICT incentives. However, this does not limit our expectations.

We have purchased an iTouch device as a trial. So far the students have been excited with our new iTouch. Although we have recently purchased 15 ASUS netbooks as part of our National Pride grant, we believe that the iPod iTouch offers something extra for our little school environment. This is a step towards the ‘learning in hand’ environment where students are exposed to the ‘in your pocket’ mobility on a daily basis.

 iTouch in hand

In regular discussions with our Principal, Claire Mellon, we decided to go with the technology that would fit comfortably in their learning world. I researched the way other students around the world picked up this device and found that school’s It Coordinators reported that they used it with ease. In our first few weeks at St Mary’s, the iTouch screen and keyboard gave students an immediate access to the Internet in their ‘pockets’. It seemed the only  non-phone option for us this year.

In the ICTASSIST home page blog I added information about the iPod cart to store and manage the sync process of multiple iPods. mac_labs_ipodcart022809This of course comes at a price (over $2000 for the cart. $7,000 if you buy all the iTouch devices to go with the cart).  I hope that one day we can purchase such an impresive unit – have a look at the specs!

It is an impressive cart that resembles our netbook cart that stores and charges each unit. The price of which could be well outside our budget at St Mary’s for quite a while. So where to from here? How do we expect to manage multiple iTouch devices? After extensive research I came across other schools, from countries around the world, who are faced with the same dilemma. How can we store and manage and sync multiple iTouch devices? Until this afternoon, I believed that multiple devices could only be synced to a Mac. Apparently I was in the dark!

ipodoctupusdiagram

This is entirely DO-able at St Mary’s Bowraville!  But I am so pleased to come across this post in the blog ’Classroom20′.

Follow this link  ….. http://www.classroom20.com/ site.

Didn’t some-one say that ‘necessity is the mother of all invention’?

I think that this method could be our direction if we are successful in procuring 10-15 iTouch devices for our small school. I will keep you ‘posted’ in this idea for our future with iTouch management in education.

TONI TWISS – mobile phones

TONI TWISS shares her thoughts on the potential of mobile phones for use in the classroom by students.

Toni is director of E-Learning and ICT Facilitator for two Waikato secondary schools. She was a 2008 Ministry of Education eFellow and is an Apple Distinguished Educator. I found her work through online conversations this week. Toni finds that it is ’somewhat ironic’ that schools fund ICT tools and access while at the same time the most accessible tool is right there in student’s pockets. Here lies the great digital divide. Read her article in the New Zealand EDUCATION REVIEW.

Sixth Sense- for our next grant please Claire?

Watch this demonstration from Pattie Maes’ lab at MIT. Wade through the intro and then be prepared for an awesome surprise. It’s a wearable device with a projector that paves the way for profound interaction with our environment. Imagine what it could bring to our Bowraville excursions and research! How to Search GOOGLE Effectively

This post is a present for our GOOGLE Queen, Denise, who has nailed Google searching this year. Take it to another level sweetie and show the team how!

So lets look at how Google’s Search options let you slice and dice your search results, explore your search and generate different views of your results page to more easily and quickly find what you need.

How do other classrooms use Laptops and iPods?

Something we need to consider: Are we a laptop school or a school that uses laptops?

Students at Stowe Elementary in Des Moines are using iPods and Laptops to enhance the learning environment. As you can see it is a busy and agile learning space. A good model to follow!

TWITTER Tweets – a good upside down read

Interesting tweets from Twitter today on digital learning in the classroom…

Peter Kent (Kent3Ed) and Jodie Reik (mentormadness)  and  Tonia from Qland (1teeby) started up an interesting conversation on Twitter. You can only use about 140 characters to message (or tweet) other people (tweeters) on the social networking site called Twitter so it gets to be a very compact conversation.

The conversation rings close to what we are trying to achieve at St Mary’s – BE WELL PROUD! We are ‘up there’ with the giants. Never fear that we are insignificant in our little school’s efforts.

What are your thoughts on this discussion in the light of what we are trying to do at St Mary’s ?

Sorry but you have to read from the bottom of the page like all good tweeters do :)

1teeby#iwbnet09 Martin Seligman developing happiness is important

 mentormadness#iwbnet09 Martin Seligman – www.authentichappiness.org

1teeby#iwbnet09 emotiona and moral intelligences – Peter Ellyard

mentormadness#iwbnet09 – developing partnerships in schools

mentormadness#iwbnet09 Need to avoid the trap of schools alone can fix this

1teeby#iwbnet approaches with promise: clear on what we can do as educators

1teeby#iwbnet09 @mentormadness yes, so let’s get rid of the toxic pessimists and then we can have others who will hear the message

mentormadness#iwbnet09 Students are growing up in a more unstable unpredictable world environment

mentormadness@1teeby We certainly do need to keep this in not only our own minds but also keep it fresh in the minds of our colleagues

betchaboy I think the natives vs immigrants thing is a massive oversimplification. There are MANY kids just as uncomfortable with change #iwbnet09

laltmann U mean natives vs immigrants?

mentormadness#iwbnet09 – Technology is driving change rather than reflecting change

mentormadness#iwbnet09 – Curriculum means once around and what you can fit in during that once around!

Kent3Ed#iwbnet09 I agree, but a bit of a weak argument

Kent3Ed#iwbnet09 I think that is trying to be made is that if teachers model being a learner that is how students will learn to learn

laltmann wot if YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW

mentormadness#iwbnet09 When you don’t know what to do, YOU DO WHAT YOU KNOW HOW TO DO

mentormadness#iwbnet09 slow internet, mouse that doesn’t talk to computer, – what annoys kids with tech

Kent3Ed#iwbnet09 the kids frustrations with tech are the se as adults – ie when it doesn’t work or when the Internet is down or slow

mentormadness#iwbnet09 – when you do everything right and it doesn’t work – Sticky Key w/ over use of shift key – when computer freezes

Kent3Ed#iwbnet09 that should have been what makes a good teacher

mentormadness#iwbnet09 What’s most frustrating using technology?

Kent3Ed#iwbnet09 what takes a good teacher: fun, won’t spend too long on any topic, knowledgeable, nice, not boring, happy, kind, fun, interesting?

 mentormadness#iwbnet09 Fun, interesting, thoughtful

mentormadness#iwbnet09 Gr8 Teacher Eccentric, Smart Fun – student description

mentormadness#iwbnet09 Stdnts choose gr8 teacher over gr8 technology. Gr8 Ts can teach well even w/ limited tech – they just use tech to best potential

Kent3Ed#iwbnet09 teacher vs technology? All students said they prefered a good teacher to good technology

mentormadness#iwbnet09 What’s more important good teacher or good technology? Which would you prefer?

mentormadness#iwbnet09 When Ts don’t know their topic well and students know more – When teachers focus on the one thing wrong – not on the 90% right

Kent3Ed#iwbnet09 all answers really relate to poor teaching really

mentormadness#iwbnet09 What annoys students? Teachers changing topics each term, When Ts get it wrong, Moving on when first step hasn’t been mastered

laltmann good technology used poorly – wot annoys students at ur schl?

Kent3Ed#iwbnet09 what are your pet peeved at school?

Kent3Ed#iwbnet09 it was not really the qn but no child said they like to learn for themselves via the Internet or YouTube, etc

mentormadness#iwbnet09 – Subject using technology which isn’t technology you find the ICTs helpful….

mentormadness#iwbnet09 Teacher because friends might tell you the wrong thing

mentormadness#iwbnet09 Teacher seems to be the winner here – seems they see the teacher as the keeper of all knowledge

mentormadness#iwbnet09 – friends because they know you better make you feel comfortable

mentormadness#iwbnet09 – friend because it would appear less geeky

mentormadness#iwbnet09 – Who would rather learn it from your best friend or your teacher?

mentormadness#iwbnet09 – Who do students ask for help with tech? – anyone, friends, internet, teacher – teacher is always last choice

mentormadness#iwbnet09 Using mobile phones in class? — yes as calculator, use japenese dictionary to translate for foriegn student, to take photos

laltmann We are working thru a unit on Japan and now the kids are checking their japanese responses with the itouch. Wot about iphones?@

mentormadness#iwbnet09 Children are keen to use technology to learn but they are also looking for guidance on meaning and values

mentormadness#iwbnet09 – Mostly not allowed – use it for social networking, texting, calling friends

laltmann – R U allowed 2 have mobile @ school? How would you use them if you were allowed to use them?

laltmann Reward system so important in my school. Great to see excited kids trying out APPS after hitting a reachable goal in class.

mentormadness#iwbnet09 GAMES AND APPS are the winners in children’s interest

laltmann One of my schools is very small school with Indigenous pop- just got our first itouch. APPS & games are winners. so good for rewards

mentormadness We use them to assist in PMP, Gross Motor development, Brain Training, PE, Smart Moves, Allowing children to have down time!

laltmann How best do you see them used?

mentormadness Yes we have 3 Wiis in our school. We use them all the time

laltmann have you used Wii Fit for educational motivation? any concerns?

 mentormadnessNo problem

laltmann We are thinking of a Wii Fit motivational program – hoping it will capture those few students of concern like itouch

laltmann Obesity + Diabetes r threats @ our sml schl. Nutrition & exercise progs well implemented but motivation hard with some stdnts
